8.2.2.2 “Local Britons” in Context

The keywords “英國人” and “洋鬼子” are foundational in the construction of the “Local Britons” theme in Er Ma. While “洋鬼子” has the potential to refer to non-Chinese foreigners beyond Britons, it predominantly associates with Britons in the story. As a result, these keywords share common semantic fields in constructing the theme of “Local Britons”. By treating these keywords as the nodes, this study generalizes the shared semantic fields by examining the L10:R10 collocates within concordance lines. The analysis of these collocates provides contextual information, which reveals the presence of at least four semantic fields shared by the two keywords (see Table 8.4).Table 8.4Semantic fields shared by the two “British Keywords” in the source text
